Meta announced at NewFronts last week that advertisers can now turn their product catalogs into video ads automatically. You create one template, and Meta generates a video ad for every product in your catalog - across Facebook, Instagram, and Reels.

If you're running significant DPA spend, this is worth trying. It gives you a way to test video creative at scale without production cost.

Video quality depends entirely on your catalog quality. A bad template, a low-quality product image, a stale price, an incomplete product title - all of it gets turned into video and served at scale.

Set it up in the right order, and you'll be positioned to get the best possible output from the system: clean video creative at scale with zero production cost.

The Catalog Audit to Run Before You Build a Template

Go to Commerce Manager and run the catalog diagnostics before building any template.

Completeness check:

  • Any product missing a title, description, price, or primary image will generate a degraded video. Commerce Manager flags these under Diagnostics.

Filter for incomplete items and fix them before building the template. An incomplete product title becomes an incomplete video headline.

Image quality check:

  • Meta's video generation performs best with clean, high-resolution product images on white or neutral backgrounds. Lifestyle images produce inconsistent results at this stage - the system wasn't built to reliably extract product-first video from contextual photography.

If your top-performing SKUs have lifestyle hero images and no clean product shots, fix that before activating catalog-to-video.

Price accuracy check:

  • If there's a mismatch between catalog and storefront prices, the video ad will display the wrong one. This is the error that generates customer complaints and ad disapprovals.

Pull a sample of 10-20 SKUs and verify catalog prices match Shopify storefront prices.

Suppressed products check:

  • Any product currently suppressed in your catalog for policy violations or data errors is ineligible for video generation.

Clear your suppression queue before building the template or you'll have unexplained coverage gaps.

Template Design - The Only Creative Decision You're Making

Once the catalog is clean, the template is the only place where operator's creative judgment lives.

Meta controls the automation. The template controls the brand: font, color palette, CTA button, layout, and the order in which product information appears.

Two template mistakes to avoid:

  1. Too much text overlay (Meta's system doesn't reformat long headlines for different placements, so anything long gets cut on Reels)
  2. Using brand colors that don't contrast with product images. A high-contrast, CTA-forward, minimal-text template produces more consistent output across placements.

Design the template as if every product image is unknown. The template needs to work with a white background product shot, a lifestyle image, and a flat lay. If it only works with one image type, it's too narrow.

How This Interacts With Your Existing DPA Campaigns

Catalog-to-video is a new creative format running inside the same campaign infrastructure as your existing DPAs.

The algorithm will test video against your current static DPA formats and allocate delivery based on predicted performance per placement - specifically, it will favor video for Reels placements where vertical video outperforms static.

For operators already running DPAs: setting up one catalog video template this week gives the algorithm an additional signal at zero additional media cost. You're adding a format to an existing campaign structure. The test runs automatically.

Before activating, make sure your existing DPA campaigns have Advantage+ placements enabled.

Catalog-to-video performs best when Meta can allocate delivery across formats and placements based on predicted performance. Manually restricting placements limits what the system can learn.

Final Thoughts

If you're running DPAs and want to test video creative at scale without production cost, this is worth setting up:

  • Run the four catalog checks.
  • Build one clean template.
  • Make sure Advantage+ placements are enabled.

Do it in that order, and you'll generate far better output than if you skip straight to the template.
